A former mosque leader has been found guilty of repeatedly abusing a young girl during Quran lessons.
Muhammod Islam, who was an imam at the Masjid-Ul-Abraar establishment in Dale Street, Chatham, denied any wrongdoing and branded the victim a liar.
He also rejected claims by her father during his trial at Maidstone Crown Court that, when confronted with the allegations in April 2018, he had confessed to the family and begged for forgiveness. But on Monday (June 29) jurors convicted the 55-year-old on six of eight charges of sexual assault of a child under 13. The verdicts for each offence, which date back to 2004, were returned on a 10 to 1 majority after 15 hours of deliberations.However, after indicating they would not be able to reach verdicts on the remaining two counts if given more time, the jury was discharged by Judge Julian Smith.
